A simple explanation

What is Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy?

A gentle, natural, drug-free approach that can help you shift unhelpful, outdated beliefs about yourself and the world around you. A small change in perception can ripple out into the rest of your life.

The basics

What is hypnotherapy and how can it help me?

Cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy is a gentle, natural, drug-free approach that can help you to address unhelpful, outdated beliefs you may hold about yourself and the world around you. A small shift in your perception can create a wonderful effect of positive change. This can then cascade into other areas of your life too.

Hypnosis is a collaborative process in which you work with the guidance of your therapist to effect change. The session is a safe space where you are able to relax and discover tools which will help you cope much more effectively with the issues you are facing.

Sessions can take place in person or remotely, through Zoom. You don't need specialist equipment to join a Zoom call — I will just send you a link by email and you can click on the link to join the session on your phone, laptop, or tablet. Remote sessions are extremely popular, as you don't have to leave the comfort of your home and you can continue to relax once the session is over, without having to drive home. You can choose to mix and match your sessions as you prefer.

Online sessions may be the most convenient option for you if you have a busy life or perhaps work unsociable hours. If you live in a remote area or worry about commuting, or have social anxieties, remote sessions could be ideal for you. Additionally, with ever-rising fuel costs, remote sessions may be the most economical and convenient option for you.

FAQ

Common questions

What if I can't be hypnotised?

Almost everyone can be hypnotised, unless there are medical issues which would cause problems with the treatment. If you are able to relax, imagine and think positively, then you can be hypnotised. Most people tell me that it's the most relaxed they've ever felt, and it is a wonderful, positive, uplifting experience.

What happens in a hypnotherapy session?

All sessions are completely confidential. You don't need to lie down on a couch and I won't be swinging a pendulum clock in front of you. You'll be seated comfortably in a chair with your feet on the ground and you'll be aware of everything that takes place. You might feel a little sleepy and very relaxed. You'll be able to ask as many questions as you like before and after each session, and you'll receive recordings and other tools to help you carry on the good work in between sessions and once your course of treatment has finished.

Will I lose control?

No. Hypnosis is a focused, relaxed state — you're aware the whole time and you can't be made to do anything against your will. Many people describe it as feeling like the moment just before you fall asleep.

How is this different from stage hypnosis?

Completely different. Stage hypnosis is entertainment built on a willing performer; hypnotherapy is a quiet, gentle therapy where you're always in control and the only person you're working on is you.

How many sessions will I need?

Many people may see change in 4 to 6 sessions.

Is it confidential?

Absolutely. Everything we discuss is confidential, in line with my professional registration. The only exceptions are the legal safeguarding duties that apply to every registered therapist.
